Today we learned Signpost 5: Again and Again. The notes are below:
Book 2 is supposed to be finished by the time we meet on 3/30. We do not have a class on 3/23, but students are supposed to be reading their book this week and having a journal entry for 3/23. Additionally, they should be reading the rest of the book the week of 3/25-3/30 and writing a final journal entry for that book. I am hoping to see more signposts showing up in your journal entries.
In short, write a journal entry per week and finish you book.

Overview from 3/9 and Assignment due 3/16
Today we did some extra practice with the signpost we learned last week, and I checked in with each student on their journals and how many journal entries they are missing. Students should have 7 free journal entries written since we started back to FAME in January, but several students are behind because they didn't do journals certain weeks:
Due next week: All students must continue reading this week, HOWEVER students do not need to write any entries unless they have some to make up. I spoke with each student about how many journal entries they were behind on, so each student knows whether they need to write any this week AND how many.

Overview from 3/2 and Assignment due 3/9
Today we learned Signpost #4 Tough Questions:
FOR NEXT WEEK:
- You must be well into your next book (it is supposed to be finished by March 30th (4 weeks away)
- You MUST have a started cover page...please see last week's blog entry for a review of the cover page AND the video that shows the journals if you need it.
- You MUST have a free entry. If you didn't have a free entry last week, you may want to consider writing TWO this week...or responding to six different elements of your book instead of just 3.
- Fill out this survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe3Jm-VOohqB3iwK3zFhqZqTTUKECpubFoT5OgDLYRE1Vag-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

Overview from 2/23 and Assignment due 3/2
Today I had the students read "Thank You, Ma'm" by Langston Hughes. I gave them each a graphic organizer for the three signposts we have learned so far. They had to find each signpost in the story and respond to each while addressing the anchor questions and literary elements each signpost contributes to.
FOR NEXT SATURDAY:
FOR NEXT SATURDAY:
- Students need to have started their new (2nd) book.
- Students should start a cover page for the 2nd book
- Title
- Author
- Genre
- Summary (only 5-7 sentences...wait until you have finished the book to write this)
- Rating for the book with 2 reasons for your rating (wait until you finish the book to rate)
- PICTURE for book is encouraged...can be drawn or printed. Creativity is not graded.
- On the page following the started cover page, students should do a free entry on what they have read so far in the book. They can pick topics from the free journal entry page. If they are seeing signposts already, they can make those part of the entry. FREE ENTRIES SHOULD BE 3 DEVELOPED PARAGRAPHS AT A MINIMUM. Email me if you have any questions, (fameacademy.literarcy@famefund.org)
- Click this link and fill out the survey
Here is a link to a video that explains the layout of the journal. You can ignore some of the comments about how many books you will be reading as this video is from last year and we have made some changes to those requirements. The journal layout, however is the same.

Overview from 2/2 and Assignment due 2/9
Today we did some additional practice with the Words of the Wiser signpost we learned last week. We looked at a sample text together, and we talked about different ways these words can be presented.
We also looked at the free entry handout and talked about how not to answer certain prompts. Each response MUST be specific to the book being read, and the responses cannot be too broad so that whether the book is being read is not clear.
Additionally, I am looking for more developed entries for next week. Paragraphs should be 5-7 sentences where students are making their claim about the text that is based upon the response and then providing some evidence from the text.
When grading the journals, I noticed that students are forgetting to mention the literary elements that are anchored to each signpost. For example, they will tell me the words of the wiser they see, and they will answer the anchor question of how that might affect the character, but they won't mention the theme. Each signpost has at least ONE literary element that should be addressed.

For next week:
Keep reading. Your current book should be finished by 2/16.
